Oral History Interview with Bill Singer

June 8, 2026

This was an interview conducted by Eric Young with Bill Singer, a lawyer who was one of the first to specialize in LGBTQ legal issues during the early 1980s AIDS crisis. Bill discussed how he came out as gay in 1981 while maintaining his law practice in rural New Jersey, but was eventually fired from his law firm because he was gay. He described founding the Hyacinth Foundation in 1985 with Margie Nichols to provide legal and support services to people affected by AIDS, including doing pro bono deathbed wills for HIV-positive clients across 21 New Jersey counties. Bill explained how the AIDS crisis forced the gay community to seek legal recognition for relationships and family rights, which later propelled the broader LGBTQ rights movement forward. He recalled the isolation he experienced from the legal community and the emotional toll of working with dying clients while facing limited support from colleagues and bar associations. Bill noted that the AIDS epidemic led to the creation of viatical settlements (life insurance policy sales) and highlighted the unique challenges faced by gay men in rural areas who contracted HIV through behavior that would have been considered "straight" in urban settings. He emphasized how the crisis claimed many of his peer group and left him with few friends his age, while expressing hope that his legal work helped create a more accepting world for future generations.
